HOW TO READ A STOCK CODE

What Is A Stock Index?

A stock index is a collection of companies that are grouped together as a measure on how the stock market and the economy is faring. Most major exchange would have one benchmark index that tracks the performance of the stock market.

Some of the common indices in Asia are:

  • Hong Kong: Hang Seng Index (30)

The main index in Hong Kong is the Hang Seng Index. It is a market capitalization weighted index of thirty of the largest companies listed on the Hong Kong Exchange. You can find the list of the 30 companies here.

  • Singapore: Straits Times Index (30)

Similarly, the main index in Singapore is the Straits Times Index. It is a market capitalization weighted index of some of the thirty largest companies listed on the Singapore Exchange. You can find the list of the 30 companies here.

  • Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (30)

In Malaysia, the main index is called the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index. It is a market capitalization weighted index of some of the thirty largest companies listed on Bursa Malaysia. You can find the list of the 30 companies here.

Stock Code Link

Counter Name:

The Name of the company or security.

SIP

Specified Investment Product: These securities can only be bought by certified investors. Your brokerage can help with the process of getting certified. Typically, these products are listed as complex products and investors would need to be financially trained to buy them.

Code

The ticker code of the company or security. For example, DBS Group Holdings has a ticker code of D05.

Rmk

Any additional remark about the company will be made here. Remarks can include:

  • Suspension
  • Pending listing
  • Delisted
  • Ex Dividend
  • Ex Bonus

LT

Listing type: The section highlight if the company or security has a primarily or secondary listing on SGX. Primary listing means that the SGX is the first point of listing for the company, while secondary would mean that the company has a duel-listing status somewhere else on its home exchange. Example of companies listed on SGX as a secondary listing are:

  • IHH Healthcare Bhd – Primary Listing at Bursa Malaysia
  • Hongkong Land Limited – Primary Listing at London Stock Exchange
  • Fortune REIT – Primary Listing at Fortune REIT

BLot

Minimum lot size: The current minimum lot size in Singapore is 100 shares. This mean you would need to buy at least 100 shares of the company you are investing in.

Last

Its last traded price.

Chg

How much has the price changed from the last closing price.

%

How much has the price changed from the last closing price in term of percentage.

Vol

The total volume of shares traded that day. This is calculated in term of the 1,000 shares. So if a company like UOB has traded 98.0 Vol, it means a total of (98 x 1000) 98,000 shares have changed hand that day.

BVol

The current volume of buyers in the market.

Buy

The current buying bid price.

Sell

The current selling ask price.

SVol

The current volume of sellers in the market.

Open

The opening price of the stock that day.

High

The highest price of the stock that day.

Low

The lowest price of the stock that day.

Value

The total value of trade that were executed that day. This is counted in SGD.

Home Exchange

The home exchange of the security if it has a primary listing elsewhere other than Singapore.

Classification of Home Jurisdiction

The classification of the home country of the company’s listing status.

Continuing Listings Obligations

This is only applicable for securities which counts Singapore Exchange as its primary place of listing. It is required to follow the SGX-ST Listing Manual to maintain its listing status in Singapore.

Sector

This is the industry or sector classification of the company or securities.

Name

Rem

Remark of the security such as whether short-selling is available for the stock.

Last Done

Last done price of the security

LACP

Last Closing Price adjusted for events such as bonus issues or dividends.

Chg

Change in price from the LACP

% Chg

Change in price from the LACP in percentage

Vol

The total volume of shares traded that day. This is calculated in term of the 100 shares. So if a company like Airasia has traded 97,000 Vol, it means a total of (97000 x 100) 9,700,000 shares have changed hand that day.

Buy Vol

The current volume of buyers in the market.

Buy

The current buying bid price.

Sell

The current selling ask price.

Sell Vol

The current volume of sellers in the market.

High

The highest price of the stock that day.

Low

The lowest price of the stock that day.

Nominal Price

Change (%)

Change in price from the last closing price in percentage

Turnover (‘000)

The total value of trade that were executed that day. This is counted in HK$.

Volume (‘000)

The total volume of shares traded that day. This is calculated in term of the 100 shares. So if a company like Tencent Holdings has traded 85,000 Vol, it means a total of (85000 x 1000) 85,000,000 shares have changed hand that day.

Range

The price range of the stock on that day.

52-Week

The price range of the stock in the last 52 weeks.

Open

The opening price of the stock

Vol/Avg

The total volume traded for the stock on that day and measured against its average.

Mkt Cap

The market capitalization of the company.

P/E

The current price to earnings ratio of the company. It is calculated from its share price divided by its last-twelve-months earnings per share.

Div/Yield

The last 12-month dividend per share and the dividend yield of the company.

EPS

The last 12-month earnings per share.

Shares

Total share count outstanding.

Beta

The volatility of the stock price. A figure of 1.0 means it has the volatility of the market. A figure less than one means the stock price is less volatile than the market.

This figure is typically inaccurate on Google Finance

Inst. Own

The percentage of institutional ownership.

This figure is typically inaccurate on Google Finance

YAHOO FINANCE

Last done price of the security

Open

The opening price of the stock

Bid

The current buying bid price.

Ask

The current selling ask price.

Day’s Range

The price range of the stock on that day.

52-Week Range

The price range of the stock in the last 52 weeks.

Volume

The total volume traded for the stock on that day

Average Volume

The average volume traded for the stock on a particular day

Market Cap

The market capitalization of the company.

Beta

The volatility of the stock price. A figure of 1.0 means it has the volatility of the market. A figure less than one means the stock price is less volatile than the market.

This figure is typically inaccurate on Yahoo Finance

P/E Ratio

The current price to earnings ratio of the company. It is calculated from its share price divided by its last-twelve-months earnings per share.

EPS

The last 12-month earnings per share.

Earnings Date

The annual reporting date for the company.

Dividend and Yield

The last 12-month dividend per share and the dividend yield of the company.

Ex-Dividend Date

The date that dividend is considered paid out

1y Target Est

The target price of the company surveyed from the sell-side analysts. Data mostly available for US Stocks.
